A knee ankle foot orthosis (KAFO) is used to assist standing and walking by supporting both knee and ankle joints.
KAFOs are most commonly used to treat paralysis or weakness of the upper leg. This can result from various conditions such as polio, multiple sclerosis, and spinal cord injuries. Other indications include instability of the knee and ankle, quadriceps weakness or absence, hyperextension of the knee, and varus or valgus deformity correction in children.
Recent developments in technology have allowed for use of microprocessors in KAFO knee joints. The Ottobock C-Brace® KAFO allows users to flex their leg under load (in order to sit down, for example), negotiate slopes, walk on uneven terrain or descend stairs step-over-step.
KAFOs are custom made for each individual. We provide KAFOs tailored to the specific needs of clients through consultations and detailed examinations.
